It was a bittersweet senior night for both the Miners boys and girls basketball squads, who fell to Jordan. The girls squad kicked things off, falling to Jordan 37-27. The boys squad also fell to Jordan afterward 89-76. The boys squad is now 3-15 this season, and the girls, 4-11. Both teams are nearing the end of their regular seasons. The teams held a combined seniors ceremony between the two games. Players walked onto center court with family, while the crowd got to learn some fun facts about their time at the school and their future plans. “They’ve been at one of the best senior classes I’ve ever coached,” said boys head coach Vito Winkworth. “They’ve been through a lot of coaches during their time here at Park City. … It’s been hard for them to be a senior — to play a different role than they might’ve wanted or expected to play.”Freshman Hadley Flach drives the ball toward the hoop against Jordan defenders on Friday. Seniors for the girls are Lida Liles, Jonny Spencer, Liv Smith and Alexia Lnu. Both boys and girls squads oversaw coaching changes this season, with Jonny Bates taking over for the girls from Winkworth. The girls’ game with Jordan got away from them late as they couldn’t get enough baskets to pair with their defensive stops. The boys were outmatched the entire game but battled hard, outsourcing Jordan in the fourth quarter. “We did all right,” said Bates after the loss. “Dialing in for 32 minutes has been something we’ve been working on. It’s a bummer we lost. We’ve still got some more games ahead of us to send the seniors off (better).”Credit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordCredit: Clayton Steward/Park RecordPlayers on both squads touched upon team bus rides, dinners and time spent together as some of their favorite memories from their time on their teams. The boys have five remaining regular-season games, all on the road. The girls have six, with one home game against Mountain Crest Jan. 31. Both teams will be seeking wins to make a playoff push. Senior Michael Zagin dribbles the ball up the court against a Jordan defender on Friday. The playoff brackets will be revealed Feb. 8. Twenty four teams will make each bracket. “It’s been good getting to know everybody,” added Bates on his highlight of the season thus far. “We were strangers six months ago … This group is helping me understand what I want to achieve.”The girls squad is scheduled to take on Cottonwood Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the road. The boys squad will be traveling to face Cottonwood as well Wednesday on the road at 7 p.m. Both teams will also travel to take on Tooele Friday, with the girls game tipping off at 5:15 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.The post Miners basketball squads fall on senior nights appeared first on Park Record.
