SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Six planets are set to align Tuesday evening, four of which will be visible to the naked eye, according to astronomers. NASA refers to this phenomenon as a planet parade, and there are a few good viewpoints here in San Diego County. A similar spectacle took place last June, but only two planets were able to be seen by the human eye. Time-lapse: Lunar occultation of Mars captured in rare celestial moment What is a planet parade? There are three designated Dark Sky Places in the county, all just a few hours away from the metropolitan area of San Diego. The town of Julian, known for its local tourism and agriculture, is a good place to visit for stargazing and planetary viewing. The eastbound drive to Julian takes about an hour from El Cajon via Interstate 8 and State Route 79, or from Escondido via State Route 78. The two other Dark Sky Places are Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Borrego Springs, both located just under 100 miles northeast of San Diego. How to glimpse a parade of planets in the January night sky How to view the planet parade Astronomers say the planet parade can be seen on any clear, cloudless night in January and into February. The best way to see the planets is to face south just a few hours after sunset. Venus and Saturn will be found in the southwestern direction of the night sky, according to astronomers. Face south to spot Jupiter and turn toward the east to view Mars. Experts say that a seventh planet, Mercury, could join the parade toward the end of February, before the planets end their alignment.
