COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- All across Columbus, people are reflecting and honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   The freezing temperatures did not stop “We Are Linden.” The group, dedicated to making the community safer, took to the streets to share a call for unity.  This is the fifth year of the We Are Linden MLK March but Monday’s march was the first time for some of them. People are marching to uplift their community and to keep the message of Dr. Martin Luther King alive.  On June 23, 1963, Peggy “Ms. Peg” Williams stood with King and thousands of others in Detroit.   "I reflect back when I was 16, back in the 60s," Williams said.  It was a boiling hot day.  "We all joined hands together in order to change the consciousness of a nation," Williams said.   Now, on a day with below-freezing temperatures, Williams, a South Linden Area Commissioner dedicated to giving back to the community, is walking for the same message in Linden.  "No matter where you are, you can fight against injustice and it's okay,” she said. “It's your civic duty to fight against injustice."  It’s a message We Are Linden founder Ralph Carter works to instill in the children marching.  "Knowing that the pride still reigns, and we want to keep that and keep championing that pride of the community and so on, these kids that no matter what, we want to keep going, keep fighting, not give up," Carter said.   For a few of these children, it’s a way to show their hope for their community.  "I think we should make a better community, help each other, bring each other up," We Are Linden member Antwan Overton said.  "I see it as a community where everybody gets along and Martin Luther King Jr., I have a dream speech actually comes true," We Are Linden member Milaya Taylor said.  Whether it’s in the blazing sun or frigid cold, those who came out on Monday wanted to make sure the message was heard loud and clear.  "The color of your skin does not determine your value; the fact that you are human is what makes you valuable," Williams said.   The march ended with a gathering indoors for everyone to come together, get warm, and honor the day.
