CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - Ice, snow, and near low temperatures are different conditions than our area is used to, but Chatham officials say they are prepared for the winter storm. A State of Emergency has been issued for the county. Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) Director Dennis Jones says their main concerns are ice on the roads and keeping folks warm.Jones says they are watching the timing of the storm to decide when to salt and sand roads locally. With the low temperatures and dangerous wind chills, He says protecting people and pets are most important. If you do go outside, dress in multiple layers. "You want to protect any exposed skin, your head, your hands, your neck. Wear a scarf, wear a hat, wear some gloves. Any exposed skin, especially when it gets really, really cold and the wind chills get down into the teens, you have the potential to have hypothermia or even get frostbite," Jones said. Officials also want residents to protect their property. Jones says you should drip your pipes and cover them if they're outside. Also, be aware of your space heaters. Make sure it's at least three feet away from anything flammable, and don't plug space heaters into extension cords. If you're using a generator, keep it outside. Officials urge you to never use your oven to warm your home. Mayor Van Johnson and other leaders are urging people to stay inside with your pets. "We don't know what this is going to bring for us. And so our words to our residents is, if you don't have to go outside, don't. Stay home, watch Netflix, make some soup, and enjoy your family. The schools are closed. Just find ways just to hunker down and make it past this time," Johnson said. "Our roofless neighbors should also have shelter." The State of Emergency is in effect starting Tuesday at noon through Friday. Savannah, Port Wentworth, and other city partners have warming shelters open. Johnson also asks that anyone who needs to contact the city, call 311. Only call 911 for emergencies. According to Jones, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport will still be operational, though airlines may adjust flights according to the weather. A statement from Georgia Power was also read by Jones, stating that the company has crews out and ready to respond should their be an outage. According to Pooler Mayor Karen Williams, the council meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. has been canceled. All agenda items will be moved to the next meeting in February.
