LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Today state and city leaders gathered at the Central Bank Center for the 31st annual Unity Breakfast, celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “In the essence of Dr. King, we want to commit ourselves to serving our community,” Kendriana Price with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. said. Price said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s messages about service is what stands out the most to her. This event serves to aim as a reminder of the late Dr. King’s work. “His dream of justice, his dream of community and opportunity, and most certainly his dream of fairness for all people,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. Those in Lexington who work to create equal opportunities and carry on King’s legacy were honored with Unity awards. Many say there is still work to be done. “When we work together, and we’re intentional in our actions, we can make a difference,” Governor Andy Beshear said. “We cannot stop and we will not stop. As Dr. King also said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” So, while this one day is celebrated, many say these principles should be lived year-round.
