MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- In less than 24 hours, Memphis-Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins will find out if she will be out of a job. The school board is scheduled to discuss if it wants to fire Dr. Feagins. As the clock ticks down to the fate of Dr. Marie Feagins as superintendent being decided Tuesday night, some MSCS school board members such as Michelle McKissack are making a last-minute plea to their colleagues to extend a lifeline to the embattled school leader and save her job. "What everyone's been saying is, give her time. Give her time," McKissack said. "She's only worked through one full semester of a school year, so not even an entire school year yet. So, I'm hopeful that they have listened to that." However, some school board members who want Dr. Feagins out said in her short tenure on the job, she has shown a pattern of failed leadership. "After eight months, Dr. Feagins has not demonstrated transformational leadership critical to the success of the largest school district in Tennessee,' MSCS Chair Joyce Dorse-Coleman said. The "Dr. Feagins vs. the MSCS school board" drama recently caught the attention of some county commissioners calling for a "no-confidence" vote against the board. And now, a bipartisan group of commissioners wants public meetings to be held before the board makes a final decision. County OKs ‘no confidence’ vote against school board "I'm in agreement that I think that some brakes may need to be put (on)," Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell said. "We need to hear more, and we need to hear why." There's been some speculation that some board members may call for the board chair to be replaced. A spokesperson for the school board couldn't confirm that but McKissack said she's heard some rumblings. "Well, I have heard that, but you know, just as we don't want to give the superintendent the boot, I want to give my board chair, the opportunity to lead and to listen to the community and to respond accordingly," McKissack said. Now, some state lawmakers have said they could get involved, even taking over the district if Dr. Feagins is let go. "I'm certainly hopeful that that will not happen - that there's a state takeover, so to speak," McKissack said. "But what I do want to focus on is what's best for children. And it's always supposed to have, you know, local leadership." Last week, WREG received documents that before a vote to terminate takes place, there will be a report by an unnamed outside counsel. School board may name interim superintendent after Feagins vote According to the school board's agenda, "if necessary," the board will also select an interim superintendent after deciding if Dr. Feagins will keep her job or not. In fact, WREG has received documents from several sources saying the principal's association has sent out a survey allegedly asking school principals who they'd like the school board to appoint as interim superintendent to finish the school year. All of this as some school board members are calling for prayer. "Pray for this district, this school board that you know we lead not only just with our minds, but with our hearts, and to do what's best," McKissack said. As for MSCS Board Chair Joyce Dorse-Coleman's termination resolution, it claims Dr. Feagins should be terminated for cause without pay. However, if the district fires Dr. Feagins without cause, she'll be entitled to more than $487,000 in severance and could possibly sue the district for millions more.
