It was our coldest morning in nearly a year to kick off the King holiday across Central and Eastern Kentucky. With another Arctic air mass dropping into the eastern part of the country along with clearing skies and a fresh snowpack, temperatures dipped into the low single digits with a few spots falling below zero. Fortunately the winds died down by daybreak but it didn’t take much for our “feel-like” temps to fall below zero at times early. Full sunshine through the afternoon did little to moderate temperatures with afternoon highs struggling to reach the mid teens, which is nearly 30 degrees below average, even for late January. Heading into Tuesday expect another frigid night with single digit lows, although a weak upper level wave approaching from the northwest will have a bit of an impact on temperatures. Clouds should increase and with a light southwest flow kicking in, most locations should bottom out temperature-wise around midnight before readings become steady and rise slightly toward sunrise. A few flurries and/or snow showers can’t be ruled out to go along with mostly cloudy skies Tuesday as afternoon highs crawl back into the upper teens. A Cold Weather Advisory is out for early Tuesday morning with temperatures/wind chills expected to be quite low again. A historic winter weather event is set to unfold across the Gulf coast where several inches of snow is legitimately possible through Southern Louisiana, Mississippi and points eastward as a wave of low pressure interacts with the very cold air that far south. Winter Storm Warnings are posted for a good chunk of the Deep South into Tuesday! Our coldest morning of this latest Arctic event should be Wednesday morning with clear skies, light winds and a bit of snow on the ground helping temperatures to drop below zero in many spots to begin the day. This would be the first time below zero in Lexington almost 1 year to the day (-7 last January 21st) so a bitterly cold start is on the table. With more sunshine around and winds shifting to the south, afternoon highs should climb back into the mid-20s. While that is still well below average it will be the beginning of a “warming” trend into the late week. Thursday should feel much better ahead of another wave of energy diving in from the northwest as temperatures start the day in the mid-teens and afternoon highs actually make a run back toward the freezing mark. Sunshine much of the day should help this process along before clouds increase along with the chance of a few flurries/snow showers once again to finish out the week on Friday. It may feel downright balmy to kick off the weekend with sunshine and highs back in the low 40s on Saturday so I’m sure area car washes will be busy! Another storm system will creep in from the southwest and at this point it looks like mainly a chilly rain event although the models are hinting at trying to hold some colder air back into the Ohio Valley so we’ll keep an eye on that. ABC 36 HOUR FORECAST MONDAY NIGHT: Clouds increase, still frigid. Lows in the upper single digits. Wind chills below zero at times. TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy with a few flakes. Highs in the upper-teens.
