Noblesville unites for Day of Serivce
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — Hundreds of people came together in Noblesville for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
At the International Disaster Emergency Service, volunteers united to pack 24,000 meals to help those in need after a disaster.
“On a day when students and families are out of work, it doesn’t have to be a day off; it can be a day on. That day can contribute to good things in our community,” Serve Noblesville’s Executive Director Patrick Propst said.
About 200 passionate volunteers, including families and community leaders, were united by a common goal to embody Dr. King’s vision through acts of service and unity.
The nutritious meal kits include rice, soy, and vegetables which are shipped to countries in need after disasters.
“We have partnered with Serve Noblesville to come in, and the volunteers are packing meals together. Six meals in a bag that will feed six people. Those meals will be boxed up and shipped over. Meals packed today will be going to Ukraine,” Jody England, director at IDES, said.
From bright-eyed children to dedicated retirees, they all contributed to celebrating Dr. King’s message of equality and justice through action.
“It’s a team assembly line from start to finish. There’s a little bit of friendly competition. We had a fantastic mini-manager helping us keep on track to fill the bags, measure them, and close them to get them boxed up in large quantities to go out the door,” Sarah Reed, community development director for Noblesville, said.
This annual day of service not only honored the legacy of Dr. King, but also demonstrated the community’s resilience and commitment to making a tangible difference.
“This is where I’ve met my closest friends. It fills me up to connect with our neighbors, meet new people, have a result of what we’ve done together, and have that connection with our community,” Michelle Schmidt, Serve Noblesville board president, said.
