BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Thinking of traveling to Kansas City for the AFC championship game on Sunday? AAA has some travel tips to consider. Our Dave Greber spoke with Elizabeth Carey, Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for AAA of Western and Central New York, on Monday about what Bills fans should know about making the trip to Kansas City. Last-minute flights from Buffalo to Kansas City are very expensive, so Carey recommends making the 1,000-mile trip by car. That will take approximately 15 hours, so plan accordingly. “You know the Bills Mafia is going to do this,” Carey said. “Carpool, a bunch of people, split the cost in gas. It’s going to cost about $100 each way. You get a few people in a van and you split that, it’s your best economical way if you have the time on your hands to drive that far.” As for hotels, Carey recommends staying in the downtown area or by the Kansas City airport. Hotels close to Arrowhead Stadium are extremely pricey, but hotels in downtown Kansas City and by the airport are much more affordable. “A lot downtown and near the airport,” Carey said. “Any different price point you can think of -- $120 a night, $200 a night. There’s just limited hotels right around the stadium, so those are like $400 or more a night or sold out. So you’re going to want to stay downtown or near the airport and then transfer in or drive in to the game.” Carey also recommends sampling the world-famous barbeque that the city has to offer. “There’s a couple Bills Backers bars, so people will definitely be going there,” Carey said. “They’ll bring some Labatts and the chicken wings and the hometown favorites. But you have to have the Kansas City barbeque. That’s part of the thing we’re seeing with travel -- people going to different destinations, but food is a huge part of it. Everyone is a foodie and wants to try all the different dishes.” The championship game is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on WIVB.
