AUSTIN (KXAN) — For many Central Texas kids, the possibility of snow brings immense excitement. But for those traveling to work or checking on loved ones, it can be a stressful trek. “We’re not used to this kind of winter weather that we're expecting to see in Central Texas, and that's why it's so important that people prepare themselves as well as their vehicles if they do have to be out there on the roadways,” Doug Shupe, corporate communications manager for AAA Texas, said. Signs of hypothermia as bone chilling weather arrives Before heading out onto the roads, there are certain things to remember. Tips for staying safe include: Checking your tire tread and inflation. Checking your car’s battery. Checking your headlights, tail lights and turn signals. Replacing brittle windshield wipers. “Anybody can check their tire tread by getting a quarter and putting it upside down in the grooves of the tire,” Shupe said. “If you can see the top of George Washington's head, that means you don't have enough tread on your tires, and you really should replace them before driving in these winter conditions.” Winterizing your car for the cold and wintry mix The public is also encouraged to have an emergency roadside kit in their vehicle. Items recommended, but not limited to, include: Jumper cables. Jackets, gloves and hats. Basic tools, like a warning triangle. Smartphone charger. Bottled water and snacks. Before leaving the house, drip faucets, open kitchen cabinets and cover external pipes until temperatures get above freezing. Ultimately, safety is the highest concern, so steer clear of emergency vehicles on the sides of the roads, maintain a safe distance between cars, avoid using cruise control and watch out for children at play. “Go very, very slow and always be mindful that there could be kids out there playing in the snow,” Shupe said.
