JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) -- With winter weather expected to move through James Island this week, the town is helping residents prepare their homes. A winter storm watch will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning in anticipation of bitterly cold temperatures and possible winter precipitation. Town officials said they have been monitoring potential impacts on the island, which could include power outages and unsafe travel conditions. "While there's still uncertainty in the forecast, the National Weather Service has told us to expect dangerously low temperatures and the possibility of significant snow and ice," Mayor Brook Lyon said. "So, we're asking residents to make preparations now, if you haven't already, and to keep a close eye on local news and weather reports for important information throughout the event.” South Carolina encourages residents prepare for possible winter weather impacts The town will distribute sand and bags on a first-come, first-served basis Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Town Hall (1122 Dills Bluff Road). The sand can be used on walkways, driveways, and other outdoor areas to reduce the risk of slipping if ice forms. Shovels will not be provided, but town staff will be available to assist people on-site. Two town meetings scheduled for this week — Wednesday's Mill Point Family Park public input session and Thursday's Neighborhood Council meeting — are postponed until further notice.
