ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monday marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the day the nation honors the life and legacy left behind by the human rights leader and activist. "What we know is that Dr. King stood for creating the beloved community," said Simeon Banister, chair of the Greater Rochester MLK Jr. Commission. The Greater Rochester MLK Jr. Commission hosted its 40th annual community celebration at Kodak Hall. The event featured a choir and local artists, all in remembrance of Dr. King. 2025 MLK Day events in the Rochester area "One of the themes for today is maintaining infinite hope - and the reason why that's the theme for today, is that Dr. King in a chapter that he penned in 1958 entitled Shattered Dreams, was actually an unpublished chapter says that, even though we accept finite disappointment, we look around - we see numbers that are not favorable in our community that we have some work to do, but we maintain infinite hope and hope isn't something we hope will happen, it's something we have to work to make happen," said Banister. Attendees of Monday's event at Kodak Hall included Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans, Senator Jeremy Cooney and Assemblymember Demond Meeks. The holiday was signed into law by then-President Ronald Raegan. Dr. King inspired millions through his peaceful protests and won a Nobel Peace prize in 1964. He was shot and killed in Memphis in 1968.
