CORNING, N.Y. (WROC) — A team at its best plays like they've been playing together for years. At Corning Christian Academy, under Coach Merlin Button, they have one of those teams. “I've been in basketball for a long time and coached for a long time and this is just such a unique situation that isn't afforded to a whole lot of people,” Button said. His team doesn't just feel like family, it is family. “Our starting lineup is going to consist of five brothers!” Button announced to the crowd at Monday night's game against Port City inside CCA's gym. Tyrus Peters, a senior, Teddy Peters, a junior, Denton Peters, a freshman, Gehrig Peters, a 7th grader, and Mickey Peters, a 6th grader. Mickey was the only one who had to be called up for this special moment, but his brothers all agree he deserved to be there. “I will say he knows more about basketball than anyone else here,” Tyrus said of his youngest brother. While seeing all five brothers start the game was a thrill to all, to Tyrus, it was not a surprise. “I kind of wondered if this would ever happen,” he said. A notion not that outlandish when you consider that, for years now, they've competed against each other and with each other, all the while encouraging each other, no matter the sport. “They are the last ones off the floor and the first ones on the floor, those five guys, every practice to get more knowledge and learn more about the game,” Coach Button said. Despite their dedication, as home-schooled students, playing for a high school was not guaranteed. “We would have never had this experience any place else and we came to CCA and I felt welcomed here,” Denton said. At the game Monday, the five didn't stay on the court together the whole game, but long enough to make a memory. “It's definitely something I'm going to remember for the rest of my life,” Tyrus said. As for the result, CCA defeated Port City 54-43. Nothing like winning at home, with family.
