SHERIDAN, Ind. (WISH) — A Sheridan reserve officer is under investigation Sunday for test firing weapons on a private range and striking a home with a bullet. At 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sheridan Police Department officers were dispatched to a shots fired call in the Maple Run subdivision. A reserve officer on duty responded to the call and took the initial case information. After completing the call and making sure no one was injured, the officer contacted his immediate supervisor. The reserve officer determined that the incident he was investigating involved himself and another person 10 minutes before the call. The reserve officer and the other person were test firing two non-department issued guns on a private range with a backstop with railroad ties and dirt backfill. Investigators revealed that during this test firing on the range, at least one bullet struck a home in the Maple Run subdivision in Sheridan, which is about three quarters of a mile away from the range. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department was notified by Sheridan Police Chief Michael Nielson, and they were asked to investigate the incident since it involved an officer from the Sheridan Police Department. The range has been closed until further notice. The identity of the reserve officer was not provided by investigators.
