(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — A dangerouslly cold arctic air mass has invaded the region. Temperatures were more than 25 degrees below normal on Saturday, Jan. 18 for many areas. The frigid air has dropped down from the north and enveloped most of the nation. Along with the extremely cold temperatures, wind will also be an issue. Even a slight breeze will make the frigid temperatures feel even worse. Sunday morning, Jan. 19 will have a wide variety of wind chills across the area, but the mountains will continue to see some of the most extreme temeperatures. Westcliffe, Salida, Gunnison, and Leadville will have wind chills roughly 30 degrees below zero around sunrise. Monday morning, Jan. 20 will also have some very cold wind chills, but perhaps not quite as significant for the mountains. Everyone in Southern Colorado will likely be dealing with temperatures well below zero for the first half of the day. Another Arctic front is expected to arrive heading into the beginning of the work week. With that additional push of cold air, the region may see some more light snow and continued dangerous wind chills. Tuesday morning, Jan. 21 is expected to be the coldest period for this arctic outbreak. Wind chills in the mountains may be approaching 50 degrees below zero at this time. Colorado Springs may be dealing with wind chills nearly 30 degrees below zero before sunrise. All of Southern Colorado is expected to be an ice box at this time. The good news is that models are in agreement of a significant improvement by the afternoon. The arctic air mass will begin exiting the region and temperatures should rapidly improve. We may even be back above freezing by Wednesday, Jan. 22.
