Show Caption1 of 15Expand HIGHTSTOWN  — While the Hopewell Valley wrestling team’s expected 43-16 victory on Saturday did not produce any notable team developments, there was no doubt which wrestler delivered the signature personal victory to end any chances Hightstown had of making the final score close. Front and center Hopewell Valley senior Luke Caldwell, who might very well have locked up the top seed at 138 pounds for this weekend’s Colonial Valley Conference Tournament by dominating Chris Cropanese, 11-6, to give his team a 22-9 lead and trigger a run in which the Bulldogs won four of the next five bouts to win going away in a battle of CVC division leaders. Both wrestlers weighed in at 138, but when Hopewell elected to move Caldwell up a weight, Hightstown did the same with Cropanese. Starting with a first-period takedown and ending with another three-own pointer late in the third period, Caldwell was pretty much in complete control of the wrestler considered to be the best in the Rams’ lineup. “I wrestled him before in middle school, but never in high school,” said Caldwell. “I don’t look at it like what I did, but rather how we wrestled well as a team. Our 144 pounder Isaac Miller is out (with an injury) and I just want to help the team wherever I can.” For those not familiar with Caldwell, he’s the son of Hopewell Valley football coach Dave Caldwell and an outstanding three-sport athlete who also plays lacrosse and football. His next stop is Washington & Lee University in Virginia where he will continue his lacrosse career. In the meantime he will attempt to finish one spot higher at the CVC Tournament after taking seconds in the now-defunct Mercer County Tournament the previous three years. Despite losing Miller and lightweight Sam Lowe to injuries, Hopewell Valley (14-1) certainly looks ready to dominate the field again. What separates Hopewell from the rest of the CVC teams is its balance. This point was on display by the fact Hightstown did win five of the 14 bouts, but only had one bonus point to show for it. Hopewell Valley, meanwhile, got either pins or technical falls from Said Jan Rahmani (106), Dylan Hersh (126), Max Lawruszkiewicz (138), Konrad Haugeto (157), Jett Branagh (165), and Ethan Barker  (175). In one of the best bouts of the match, Hopewell Valley’s Dean Meissner continued a big senior year with an 8-5 win over Chris Florian at 113 pounds after giving up the initial takedown. Hopewell’s Jon Trainor concluded the match with a 4-0 victory over Iker Reyes. at 215 pounds. Hopewell Valley can lock up yet another CVC Valley Division title by beating Robbinsville at home Tuesday night. Thanks to its criteria win over Steinert earlier in the week, Hightstown had already repeated as the CVC Colonial Division champion.
