FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - On Jan. 20, communities across the nation will celebrate the life and work of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was a Baptist minister, political activist, but most importantly a fearless leader whom so many Americans continue to admire and whose dream they strive to carry out. “His teachings are, in my opinion, much, much more relevant today and will remain so for future generations to come, keep that in mind, his message is eternal,” said Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, Garlanding Ceremony coordinator. In Fresno, the remembrance of Dr. King began Friday afternoon. For 41 years, the community has held events leading up to Dr. King's birthday, starting with the annual garlanding ceremony. The event took place in front of the MLK bust, located at the Fresno County Courthouse Park. “The garland is a symbol of unity and peace," said Gail Gaston, Garlanding Ceremony coordinator. The event started with welcoming remarks, followed by performances from Fresno County students, concluding with attendees laying flowers on MLK's bust. Saturday, the Clovis Police Department and the MLK Unity Committee of Fresno will host a community breakfast at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District on Fourth Street. Tickets are $5. On Sunday, Impact Fresno Pastor Edward Thomas will lead a first-of-its-kind event in Fresno. A march at Fresno City College will commemorate the 60th anniversary of Dr. King’s march from Fresno High to Ratcliffe Stadium to protest a California housing law. “He was brought by a group of ministers, pastors and leaders, there was an issue going on with fair housing, a lot of minorities wasn't able to get in certain homes, simply because of the color of their skin. Dr. King came from his comfort of being in the South, he came to California, came to our city to stand up for something that needs to be stood up for,” Pastor Thomas said. The march will begin at 2 p.m. with an event following at the college’s auditorium. "A lot of our city have no idea and no clue, that Dr. King was even here, and we're going to be able to walk that same path and honor the amazing history of Dr. King coming to Fresno," Thomas said. The following day, on King's birthday, the City of Fresno will put on its march starting at 9:30 a.m. Marchers will start at St. John’s Cathedral on Mariposa Street. Organizer, James Lett III anticipates hundreds to come out. “We have to keep it going because if we let it slow down, it'll die off, it won't happen anymore, but this is one of the best marches west of the Mississippi,” he said. Following the city's march, attendees will head to the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Fresno Street for a commemoration program.
