Jan 17, 2025
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The results are in and the community has chosen the new name for the baby lion at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
The cubs were born in November to first-time mom Zamaya. Earlier this month, Fresno Chaffee Zoo announced they would allow the community to name one of the two new baby lions, the brother to Asali (the female cub who the lion care team had already named).
The poll opened on January 10 and closed on January 16. The zoo had chosen three names and left the final decision to the community.
The three names on the poll were:
Timbavati (Tsonga) – “The place where something sacred came down to Earth.”
Maziwa (Swahili) – Milk
Taraj (Swahili) – Hope/Faith
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo revealed Friday morning that the cub's new official name is Taraj.
Zoo officials thanked the community for their participation. An official announcement has yet to be made on when the new additions to the lion pride will be out in the habitat for the public.
