EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — It wouldn't be winter in New England if we didn't have a wide range of weather conditions over the course of a single weekend. The big takeaway is that the current forecast calls for 2 to 5 inches of snow Sunday night into Monday, which is expected to make for difficult travel in the morning. However, the overall impact will be lessened since schools and some businesses will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. LOOKING AHEAD: Hour-by-hour forecast But before we see any snowfall, Saturday will be milder, with highs in the mid-40s, and rain will develop that afternoon and continue into the evening. There's also the potential for icy roads Sunday morning. Widespread snow will then develop Sunday afternoon and continue into early Monday morning, according to the forecast. For anyone who needs to drive during that time, the R.I. Department of Transportation (RIDOT) asks that they give snowplows plenty of room when they're out clearing the roads. FLIGHT TRACKER: Check on arrivals and departures It doesn't end there though. An arctic blast, along with some stronger winds, will send temperatures plummeting. Wind chills are expected to be in the teens on Monday, then drop below zero by Tuesday morning. The frigid conditions will then continue on Wednesday.
