NORTON, Mass. (WPRI) — A 6-year-old girl who was pulled from an icy river in Norton Friday afternoon has died, according to police.
Norton Police Chief Brian Clark said officers were called to Power Street to investigate reports of a missing child just before 2:30 p.m.
Due to the proximity of the child's house to the Barrowsville Pond and Wading River, the Norton Fire Department was called in to assist with the search. Clark said the child was autistic and nonverbal.
Divers suited up and entered the Wading River to search for the missing child. Clark said the divers found the girl unresponsive on the Barrowsville Pond side of the Power Street bridge nearly an hour after she was reported missing.
The child was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where Clark said she was pronounced dead.
"It is certainly a sad day in Norton," Clark said. "Our hearts go out to the family."
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
