In a statement to The Triton, University Communications said “San Diego CrimeStoppers received an anonymous call this morning reporting that a girl was being held against her will. San Diego Police pinged her cell phone, which was found to be located in the vicinity of LionTree Arena on the north UC San Diego campus.”
San Diego CrimeStoppers is an organization whose mission “is to partner with local law enforcement agencies, the media, and the public to help solve felony crimes anonymously. Crime Stoppers combats the three major problems law enforcement faces in gathering information; fear of reprisal, apathy, and a reluctance to get involved.”
On January 17, 2025, at 10:56a.m., a UCSD Timely Warning was sent out regarding an emergency in the Rimac/Liontree area. The original warning stated that there was an emergency in the area, and that students not in the area should avoid it and northern campus if possible, and that those who are in the vicinity should stay inside and lock their doors.
An updated message was sent out immediately after the first stating that UCSDPD and SDPD continue to search the area, reiterating their instruction to stay inside, lock your doors, and avoid the area if possible. They also urge people not to call dispatch unless they have information directly regarding this incident.
