PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- A man has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to stealing around $2 million worth of Fitbit devices from an Amazon warehouse based in Plainfield.
According to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office Southern District of Indiana, Dwight Oliver of Grand Prairie, Texas, received a 15-month sentence in federal prison that will be accompanied by supervised release. U.S. District Judge Matthew Brookman also ordered Oliver to pay $1,435,954.62 in restitution fees.
The investigation into Oliver began in May 2021 when he was reportedly working as a facility supervisor at a warehouse in Plainfield.
The release said that between June and September 2021, Oliver reportedly took several Fitbit devices worth an estimated $2 million before reaching their intended destinations at Amazon fulfillment centers throughout the country.
Further investigation revealed that the Fitbit devices were related to bulk purchase orders that had passed through the warehouse where Oliver worked. The release added that Oliver reportedly disabled the GPS tracker of his employer's van, which enabled him to transport the stolen merchandise without his employer being aware.
Oliver then reportedly placed the items for sale on eBay where he posed as a third-party merchant.
In total, Oliver mailed 100 stolen Fitbit devices through the United States Post Office, receiving $687,540.53 in exchange.
“Modern eCommerce depends modern logistics and supply chains, including many businesses in the Southern District of Indiana. Criminals who abuse their positions of trust to steal from customers and their employers cause harm to our economy and raise prices for everyone,” said Zachary A. Myers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. “I commend our partners at the FBI and our federal prosecutor for their commitment to this case and ensuring that the individual responsible was held accountable. The federal prison sentence imposed here demonstrates that financial crimes can cause serious harm and can result in serious consequences.”
The FBI also assisted in the investigation.
