When Americans celebrate the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, the late civil rights leader would have been 96 years old.This year, cultural institutions, community groups, and individuals throughout Baltimore and the surrounding region will pay tribute to King’s legacy through acts of service, performances, and various other events.Below is a list of some of the ways in which Marylanders are honoring King.Baltimore MLK Jr. Day ParadePerformers, community groups, government officials, fraternities/sororities, and other participants will march in Baltimore’s 2025 MLK Jr. Day Parade.The parade will begin at noon at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and North Eutaw Street. It will proceed down Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and end at Baltimore Street.This year’s theme is “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers” and the Grand Marshal is Baltimore City Solicitor Ebony M. Thompson. Reginald F. Lewis MuseumThe Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture will mark the holiday with their King Day event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. The theme is “Creative Maladjustment – Moving Forward,” and the event will feature live performances, workshops, community resources, mental health support, drumming, yoga, and more.“On what will be a challenging day for many in the Black community, the museum invites attendees to gather in solidarity, reflect on our shared history, and chart a purposeful path forward,” Lewis museum officials wrote in a news release. “Inspired by the powerful words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ‘There are some things in our society, some things in our world, to which we should never be adjusted,’ this year’s event calls for reflection, resilience, and purposeful action against ongoing challenges and injustices.A panel discussion, moderated by Morgan State University historian and archivist Dr. Ida Jones, will address King’s 1956 call for “creative maladjustment” as a path toward justice. Former Maryland State Sen. Jill P. Carter will provide remarks on the role that her father, Walter P. Carter, played in the Civil Rights Movement in Maryland.On King Day, museum visitors can choose the amount they wish to donate as their admission fee. All proceeds will support the museum’s educational and cultural initiatives. The National Great Blacks In Wax MuseumThe National Great Blacks in Wax Museum is normally closed on Mondays, but it will open its doors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as it honors King’s legacy.From 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, the museum will host griot Mama Deborah Pierce-Fankunle as she delivers a live, interactive musical performance about the women of the Civil Rights Movement.Visitors can experience wax figures and the moving Slave Ship exhibit.Admission also includes the Stephen Hayes “Cash Crop” special exhibit at the museum’s facility at 1649 E. North Ave.American Visionary Art MuseumThe American Visionary Art Museum will host their annual MLK Dare to Dream Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.From 10 a.m. to noon, AVAM visitors can make a hand-shaped pin and share how they can help others. Abu the Flutemaker will perform from 11 a.m. to noon.Then, at 1 p.m., attendees can enjoy an open mic and poetry slam. Those who want to participate can register for the open mic on site. Cash prizes will be awarded.From 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., listen to an artist talk by Jess Owens, one of the artists featured in AVAM’s “Good Sports: The Wisdom and Fun of Fair Play!” exhibition. At 3 p.m., Keur Khaleyi African Dancers will perform traditional African singing, dancing, and drumming. Audience participation is encouraged.Absolutely Perfect Catering will provide food for purchase in the AVAM Cafe from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.All day long, visitors can also attend docent-led tours, participate in a scavenger hunt in the galleries, and donate new, unopened toiletries and self care items for the House of Ruth. Items that are most needed include toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, toilet paper, paper towels, wet wipes, dish soap, and sponges.Port DiscoveryPort Discovery‘s learning specialists will present a variety of MLK Day activities for visitors to participate in on Monday.B&O Railroad MuseumFrom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday, the B&O Railroad Museum will host special MLK Day programming.On Sunday, the museum will offer free admission starting at 1 p.m.From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Rev. Hathaway will lead a lecture and discussion, followed by light refreshments.Then, on Monday, the museum will offer its “From Slavery to Civil Rights” public tour from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.Both Sunday and Monday, an “I Have a Dream” education activity for children will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Roundhouse.Also both days, visitors can also explore the museum’s “The Underground Railroad: Freedom Seekers on the B&O Railroad” exhibit.Walters Art MuseumThe Walters Art Museum will pay tribute to King with a free event Saturday.From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, enjoy performances by local poets and musicians, including Unique Robinson, Esi Abercrombi, Black Chakra, and The Storage Unit Collective.
