No longer is the Baldwinsville wrestling team undefeated against Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division foes. The Bees saw that run at the top halted Wednesday night against Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy, who took the final three bouts on the card to claim a 40-27 victory. B’ville led 27-23 going into the highest weight classes, only to see the Rams’ trio of Enes Damkaci (199 pounds), Bryce Dadey (215 pounds) and Mykola Fabian (285 pounds) all take victories – Damkaci with a technical fall, Dadey and Fabian with pins. Right before this, the Bees had won three in a row to go in front, starting at 152 pounds where Brendan Fredenburg pinned Amrou Ashkar right at the end of the first period. Following up at 160 pounds, Cameron Sullivan pulled out a tense 6-5 decision over Chris Grosso, with Davian Longo winning at 170 pounds by pinning Braeden Hennessey late in the second period. This countered J-D/CBA’s four straight wins from 124 to 145 pounds, the closest of them Scottie Warner (138 pounds) falling 7-3 to Max Griffin. Zach Boudreau opened at 101 pounds pinning Biruk Royal in the second period and Cael Bruce (116 pounds) had a 99-second fall against Tom LaValle. Going back into tournament action on Jan. 11, B’ville made a lot of noise during the River Hawk Round Robin at Owego Academy, prevailing in three different weight classes. Bruce’s victory at 116 put his season mark at 30-1, completing his run through the tournament in a final where, in just 33 seconds, he pinned Andrew Ridge, a wrestler from Coral Springs, Florida. Improving to 22-2 on the season Brennan Kline won at 108 pounds, blanking Marshall Mahar (Oneonta) 16-0 in a semifinal technical fall before taking just 83 seconds to pin Chenango Forks’ Maddox Hubbard in the championship bout. Longo added the title at 160 to move his season record to 28-5. A 15-0 romp over Vestal’s Grayson Burns in the semifinals led to a title bout where he pinned Chenango Forks’ Brysen Fry in the second period. Boudreau got to the final at 101 before a 12-1 loss to Oneonta’s Clayton Ritter, while Warner nearly won at 138 , dropping a tight 8-6 final to Newark Valley’s Logan Rhodes. Fredenburg claimed third place at 145 in an exciting consolation bracket final where all sorts of points were scored but Fredenburg edged Owego’s Jonathan Gilliland 16-15. Nathan Cali added a third at 152 pounds, with Sullivan pinning Anthony Endres (Moravia) for fifth place at 152. Moving to girls wrestling, Baldwinsville had a big showdown with Holland Patent Thursday night and came out on top, the Bees defeating the Golden Knights 35-27. No doubt, it helped the Bees to have close to a full lineup, with HP having to forfeit four times to Abigail Clark (94 pounds), Cheyenne Chapman (138 pounds), Alexandra Coher (165 pounds) and Iliyana Malinova (185 pounds) amounting to 24 points. Still, B’ville needed three wins on the mat and got them. Arianna Leo, at 114 pounds, pinned Claire Favata in 4:30, with Haylee Robinson (132 pounds) earning a 10-0 technical fall over Ellie Roberts and Breanna Leo, at 152 pounds, needing 2:50 to get her pin over Addison Snyder.
