West Genesee, Marcellus wrestlers stand out in tournaments

Both the Marcellus and West Genesee boys wrestling teams will head north to Jefferson Community College in Watertown for Monday’s Section III Dual Meet – the Mustangs in Division II facing Little Falls in the first round, the Wildcats getting a quarterfinal against Whitesboro.
Before all this, both sides were impressive in Jan. 11 tournaments with the Mustangs amassing 189.5 points during the Dan Wickham Classic at Unatego, second only to Clarke’s 213 points.
Prevailing at 215 pounds, Chris Doshna improved to 21-1 on the season, pinning Mason Sturtevant (Adirondack) in the semifinals before he edged Southern Hills’ David Frazee in a close 6-5 title bout.
Three other Mustangs had third-place finishes. Knoll McCoy got it at 108 pounds pinning Wilkes-Barre’s Luke Pollard in 2:23, with Elliott Barbosa pinning Logan McGuire (Maine-Endwell) for third at 190 pounds and, at 285 pounds, Travis Stack getting a second-period fall over Hoosick Falls’ Sam Forrest.
Brayden Borst, at 101 pounds, pinned M-E’s Riley Whitmore for fifth place, matched by three of his teammates. Jake Burton (116 pounds) edged Adirondack’s Cole Croniser 7-6, with Dallas Wilson (145 pounds) pinning Colin Trotter (Susquehanna Valley) in 54 seconds and Jack Burton (138 pounds) getting a second-period fall over Clarke’s Johnny Jahrmarkt.
Meanwhile, West Genesee took part in the Phoenix Mid-Winter Classic and, led by Cole Willis, the Wildcats picked up 186 points to finish fourth in a 17-team field not far from Central Square’s winning total of 197.5 points.
Willis used a 16-0 technical fall over Central Square’s Isaiah May to reach the finals at 108, where he had a similarly dominant performance blanking Cicero-North Syracuse’s Grady Ellsworth 15-0 to get to the top of the podium.
Austin Fesinger reached the 131-pound title bout before Central Square’s Jaxon Perkins held him off in a tense 8-7 decision, while Raul Colon had his own close third-place bout at 190 pounds but held off the Redhawks’ Bryce St. Clair 12-11.
Logan Willis blanked Waylon Watson (Fulton) 17-0 for third place at 138 pounds, while at 101 pounds Aiden Wright claimed third place beating Central Square’s Chris Pulis 11-3. Jack Wade took fourth place at 170 pounds as Max Alexander (124 pounds) and Elijah Apps (215) each finished sixth.
WG then won head-to-head last Wednesday against Central Square, an impressive all-around performance where the Wildcats whipped the Redhawks 42-17.
Cole Willis started the match pulling out a 3-0 decision over Isaiah May. Then back-to-back second-period pins at 138 and 145 had Austin Fesinger top Andrew Paciga and Logan Willis do the same with Landyn Dinegan.
Then WG swept the higher weight classes. Wade’s pin of Jack Taskey preceded technical falls by Maxx Fesinger over Bryce St. Clair and Apps over Angelo Turo, while Omar Almlaiti claimed a medical forfeit at 285.
Marcellus also won on Wednesday night, doubling up Homer 46-23. From the opener at 160 the Mustangs won the first four bouts, including pins by Doshna, Barbosa (over Chris Slade in 42 seconds) and Anthony Decapio, who pinned Leland Donahue in just 29 seconds.
At 170, Jayden Abbott edged Colin Murphy 4-1, with Jake Burton (116) and Blaine Haney (124) gettng pins. Wilson earned a technical fall at 152, with Knoll McCoy (108) beating Patrick Maslin 11-3 and Jack Burton topping Garrett Carr 13-7.
Jordan-Elbridge made it a clean sweep for the local sides on Wednesday when it rolled past Cortland 60-8.
Though seven bouts were forfeited to the Eagles, Glen Sanchez wrestled at 190 and needed just 21 seconds to pin Anthony Donnelly. Adam DelCostello (160) pinned Karter Bush in 78 seconds as Liam Mantell (131) pinned Devlin Riotto in 2:13.
West Genesee’s girls wrestling team had two matches last Thursday night, defeating Syracuse City 35-25 while taking a close 30-29 defeat to Indian River.
Against Syracuse, while most bouts were forfeited Charlotte Retkwa, at 120 pounds, pulled off an 11-second pin over Zeinab Mohamed, with Darysya Hevko (107 pounds) taking 69 seconds to pin Keetriana Parker-Williams and Annalise Johnson (152 pounds) earning a pin over Trinity Aldrich.
Indian River edged WG with a combined six pins and forfeits. Still, Retkwa pinned Mylani Baker in between pins by Adaline Decapio (114 pounds) over Catlyn Kalunda and Marlee Sherman (126 pounds) pinning Peyton Toutant in 45 seconds. At 132 pounds Riley Butler beat Rylynn Vantassel in a 10-0 shutout.
