FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Governor Andy Beshear has announced that six Kentuckians have died as a result of last week’s winter storm, with most fatalities linked to cardiac events during snow and ice shoveling.
The governor emphasized the importance of shoveling safety to prevent further tragedies.
“Sorry to report that many, if not most, of these deaths are due to cardiac events from shoveling snow,” Gov. Beshear said. “We now need to really start talking about shoveling safety as we move forward with any other winter events. This work is often dangerous even if you might not think it is.”
The fatalities were reported in Spencer, Breckinridge, Boone, Oldham, and Franklin counties.
Gov. Beshear urged residents to take precautions when clearing snow and ice, highlighting the physical strain it can place on the body. He also reminded Kentuckians to stay vigilant as winter weather may bring additional challenges in the coming weeks.
