WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- A Missouri man who drove a truck into the barriers around the White House nearly two years ago was sentenced for the attack prosecutors say intended to overthrow the U.S. government and replace it with a "dictatorship fueled by Nazi ideology."
The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) said 20-year-old Sai Varshith Kandula will spend eight years in federal prison for the attempted attack.

According to court documents, Kandula flew from Missouri to the District on the afternoon of May 22, 2023. He arrived at Dulles International Airport (IAD) at about 5:20 p.m. and rented a U-Haul box truck at 6:30 p.m.
At 9:30 p.m., he drove into D.C. where he crashed into the barriers at H and 16th streets NW, which protect the White House and President's Park. He then drove onto the sidewalk, sending pedestrians running from the scene.
After striking the barriers, Kandula reversed and then lurched forward, ramming into the metal barriers a second time, according to court documents.
The second impact disabled the U-Haul, which began smoking and leaking fluid.
Kandula went to the back of the truck and took out a Nazi flag from a backpack.
U.S. Park Police and U.S. Secret Service officers arrested him at the scene.
According to court documents, Kandula told officers his goal was to "get to the White House, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation."
When asked how he would do that, he said he would "Kill the President if that's what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way."
He had reportedly been planning the attack for six months.
"Whether I got into the White House or not, my message was received," Kandula told the officers, in part.

He also told them that he admired Hitler, calling him a "strong leader."
The USAO said Kandula made several attempts to get other vehicles or armed security guards for the attack. For example, in the month before the attack, he requested 25 armed guards and a convoy from a security company in Virginia. He also tried contacting several other companies to rent a large tractor-trailer truck, a dump truck or another large truck.
Kandula pleaded guilty in May 2024 to a charge of willful injury or depredation of property of the United States. He was sentenced on Jan. 16, 2024, to spend 96 months in prison for the attempted attack.
Kandula's actions also caused $4,322 in damage to the National Park Service.
