HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) -- Hutchinson women's basketball celebrated a milestone Wednesday as head coach John Ontjes earned his 500th career win. The accomplishment came after the No. 1 Blue Dragons defeated Seward County 52-40 with a dominant offensive showing. It also extended its winning streak to 54 straight. With celebrations echoing around the arena, head coach John Ontjes explained it's an accomplishment he only imagined he'd reach. "You never think you could build something like that. It takes a lot of good players, it takes great assistant coaches, it takes an administration that's going to back you," he said. "I'm so happy for him, said Hutchinson Athletic Director Josh Gooch. "The 500 wins is one thing, but just the way he produces winning day in and day out. It's the day-to-day grind that he goes about." The moment made Ontjes reflect on the last 18 seasons and the reason he first took a coaching job at Hutchinson. "I thought it could be a program that you could build into something special, and I believe that we do things the right way. You know, our kids compete hard. It means a lot to them," he said. He has learned many lessons as the program's head coach. "I've become maybe a little bit more patient, a little bit more understanding. You know, I've tried to develop those important relationships a lot more," he added. The team and community are all grateful for what Ontjes has poured into the program. "The ovation, his own team was just over the top for the excitement of what this win meant. He continues to raise the bar on expectations, not only within his program but for other programs at Hutchinson," said Gooch. Ontjes says he chose to stay in Hutchinson over the years because it's a great place to call home. He was born and raised in the area and was once a basketball player for the Blue Dragons himself. He appreciates the core values and culture of the college. "It's just a great place. It's a place that we want to excel the classroom. We want to excel on the football field, on the basketball court … our staff gets along with everyone. It's just a place of excellence," said Ontjes.
