Friday is primed to be the warmest day of this week. The unseasonable warmth coming right before a winter storm. A high pressure system formed over the Pacific Northwest in the middle of this week. The high pressure has since stretched over the Rocky Mountains towards New Mexico. This high pressure has caused sinking air over the state of New Mexico. Sinking air heats up. This has led to warmer temperatures through the end of this week. An upper air disturbance will move overtop of New Mexico early tomorrow morning. This disturbance with bring a brief band of light rain and snow to western New Mexico very early tomorrow morning. The light snowfall will mainly be over the Gila. Throughout Friday morning the band of precipitation will move towards the northeast. This movement will give the Albuquerque Metro a chance at snow flurries tomorrow morning. By Friday afternoon, the upper air disturbance will have moved on from New Mexico. In its wake the jet stream will increase in intensity. This increase will bring breezy to windy local conditions to New Mexico Friday afternoon. The strongest winds will be in southeastern New Mexico. Gusts upwards of 65 mph are possible. Due to the anticipated strong winds, the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory, High Wind Watch, and High Wind Warning for portion of the southeast. These alerts will go into effect tomorrow January 17th. A winter storm will move into New Mexico on Saturday. A low pressure system that has been forming over Canada and Montana will dive down to northern New Mexico. Bringing cold artic air along with it. Snowfall on Saturday is forecasted for northern and eastern New Mexico. The heaviest snowfall is expected in northeastern New Mexico and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A cold front will also sweep through the eastern part of the state with the artic air. Temperatures are expected to drop in northern, eastern, and central New Mexico from Saturday to Sunday. Snowfall on Sunday in expected to be a lighter than Saturday in the same areas. The second blast of artic air will move into New Mexico on Monday. Along with it will be round two of snow. Monday is forecasted to be heavier than Saturday. The main snowfall will still be in northeastern New Mexico. However, the snow Monday is expected to be more widespread than Saturday. Snow is possible as far south as the Sacramento Mountains and as far west as the Albuquerque Metro. The snow is expected to clear by Tuesday afternoon. The artic air on Monday will be bringing the coldest temperatures of the season on Tuesday. Tuesday morning will begin well below freezing for most. Central through northern New Mexico will see its day start in the teens or single digits. The afternoon is set to be well below seasonal averages. Additionally, wind chill will keep the day feeling well below freezing for most.
