When she competed on “Survivor 44,” North St. Paul native Carolyn Wiger cried. Like, a lot. So it wasn’t too surprising to see her break into tears during the fourth episode of “The Traitors,” which debuted Thursday night on Peacock. In the prior episode the four Traitors — Carolyn, “Big Brother” vet Danielle Reyes, Bob the Drag Queen and fellow “Survivor” alum “Boston” Rob Mariano — had to choose three players to put on a shortlist for murder by writing their names on scrolls in the secret wine cellar without getting caught by any Faithfuls. And as it turned out, Gabby Windey (“The Bachelorette”) heard Danielle’s voice coming from the wine cellar, but quickly left the area for fear of getting caught. The three players on the Traitors’ list: “Survivor” champ Jeremy Collins, retired WWE wrestler Nikki Garcia and Ciara Miller (“Summer House”). Each had to get into a coffin and wait in darkness for the Traitors to literally put a nail in the coffin of the contestant they chose to murder. Despite a bonkers plea to work with the Traitors moving forward, Jeremy got the boot and was quite emotional about it. As was Carolyn: “Last night’s murder was really chaotic, it was really, really hard. It doesn’t feel good that we’ve murdered this person, but it’s … nobody listens to me, nobody’s hearing me. “They always say in ‘Survivor,’ like, ‘welcome to the family,” she said as she began sobbing. “And it’s like now I just killed my family, like, I just, I don’t like it. I didn’t want to murder Jeremy. Why did I allow Danielle to do that? I just feel sad inside.” After Jeremy’s murder was revealed, a theory began brewing among the Faithful. The Traitors purposely put one of their own in one of the coffins in order to throw everyone off the scent. So, the thinking went, either Nikki or Ciara should be the next to get banished. But just as it seemed that was where the vote was headed, Rob began a campaign against Bob the Drag Queen, who he increasingly saw as a threat. After some dramatic whisper sessions and an even more dramatic round table discussion, Nikki and Ciara both caught a few votes, but the majority landed on a clearly exasperated Bob. Carolyn didn’t get as much screentime as she did in the first three episodes, but then again, her name still has yet to come up as a suspected Traitor. So she lives to see another day. This season of “The Traitors” is shaping up to be a big hit. Just like the second season, it premiered as the No. 1 unscripted series in the U.S., according to preliminary data from Nielsen. But its numbers saw a 67% increase from last year. New episodes stream Thursday nights on Peacock and NBC will air the first two episodes at 7 p.m. Monday.
