SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - Six members of the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue team were honored by Governor Kristi Noem this week for the work they did this past summer during the McCook Lake flooding in North Sioux City. The swift water rescue team of Mike Murphy, Mike Olson, Adam Frick, Chris Lohan, Jack Claussen and Rob Flannery was given the Governor's Award for Heroism. The floods of June 2024 won't soon be forgotten by many people, especially first responders like the Sioux Falls Swift Water Rescue Team who were deployed to McCook Lake. "McCook Lake was really dynamic in the sense that we were constantly having changing water levels, low visibility at night," Rob Flannery with the Swift Water Rescue Team said. "A lot of door-to-door rescues. There was some very swift water in an urban environment so, yeah, going door-to-door with a boat with multiple things floating down the streets that have now become rivers or small streams," Adam Frick with the Swift Water Rescue Team said. They truly saved lives and we cannot thank them enough for all that they accomplished. But here's what we can do. I would like to give the Governor's Award for Heroism," Governor Kristi Noem said during her State of the State Address. A well-deserved honor that these men remain humble about. "We're the type of people that just like to go do our job and not get recognized, so yeah, it was a good experience," Frick said. "Being recognized by the Governor and the Capitol and all that good stuff, it's fine and well but the job is so much bigger than that," Flannery said. "The ball continues to roll and I think people are making an impact like that on a daily basis around here." Governor Noem also gave the Heroism Award to Tim Cowman, the South Dakota State Geologist with the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as conservation officers with the Department of Game, Fish and Parks -- all for the work they did during the flooding.
