Taylor's push to remove D.A. Mulroy moves ahead in Senate

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A resolution to investigate and possibly oust Shelby County's district attorney from office passed the state Senate in its first vote Thursday.
Sen. Brent Taylor (R-Memphis) filed Senate Joint Resolution 26 in the Tennessee General Assembly on Wednesday.
The resolution would appoint a five-member committee to consider the removal of D.A. Steve Mulroy.
"The clock is ticking on Interim DA Mulroy," Taylor wrote on social media.
Mulroy is a frequent target of Taylor, who believes the D.A. is soft on criminals and has "committed serious ethical violations and abused his authority by pursuing a personal and partisan agenda," according to the proposed language of the bill.

Mulroy has countered Taylor's claims, noting that recent data showed crime was down across the city during his two years in office, and boasting of his office's prosecution of the Young Dolph and Eliza Fletcher cases.
"Senator Taylor has been critical of me before I even took office, and has continually raised his profile by attacking me. His claims are untrue and vague, serving only to distract from the real issues facing Shelby County," Mulroy said on social media.
Mulroy says no Tennessee D.A. has ever been removed under this provision. He won his first term in 2022 ocver incumbent Amy Weirich with 56% of the vote.
