Teens charged in Augusta woman's death will not be charged as adults

AUGUSTA, Kan. (KSNW) - Two teenagers charged with killing a 93-year-old Augusta woman are not going to be charged as adults.
On Thursday, a Butler County judge denied the prosecutor's request to do so. The judge cited age and state law when issuing his ruling. The State has reserved the right to appeal.
On Sept. 6, 2023, Joanne Johnson was found dead in her home in the 1700 block of Robbins St. Authorities believe she was killed between the evening of Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, and the evening of Sept. 3, 2023.
Nearly a year later, on Aug. 15, 2024, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said that two 14-year-old girls from Augusta were arrested. They were both charged two weeks later with first-degree murder.
Because they are juveniles, the court did not release their names. Pleas of not guilty were entered for both girls. The judge also denied a motion to release the affidavit and charging documents, so other details about the case will not be released.

In December 2024, the assistant county attorney made the motion to prosecute the juveniles as adults, which was denied on Thursday.
A motion hearing is scheduled for April 18 and jury trials have been set for the weeks of May 5 and June 16.
