Veterans groups join forces to support Johnston family displaced by fire
Jan 16, 2025
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Johnston family is beginning to see a glimmer of hope after losing everything in a house fire late last year.
Iraq War veteran Jack Teixeira, his wife and their children were left displaced when their home was destroyed on Dec. 28, 2024.
On Thursday, Teixeira finally had reason to smile as Tiverton VFW and American Veteran Nation members presented his family with two checks to help with recovery costs.
"Honestly grateful," Teixeira said. "I'm a little shocked at, you know, people trying to reach out to help. It's not something I'd typically ask for, but it's definitely helpful. When you realize you don't have anything and all the stuff you need all of a sudden, bills add up really quick."

The fundraising effort was coordinated in just a matter of days, with both organizations stepping up to assist a fellow veteran in need.
Stephan Greenwood, junior vice commander of VFW Post 5392 and vice president of American Veteran Nation, said it was a simple decision to help.
"When we heard this story we immediately went into action, took a vote, and hands down unanimously we provided what we could for Jack," American Veteran Nation President Shawn Willis said.
Teixeira said his family is overall stable and currently staying in a hotel as they search for temporary housing. He expects the rebuilding process to take six months to a year.
The family is still waiting to hear what it will cost to rebuild their home.
