BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington woman is facing felony charges of neglect and criminal recklessness after police say she stuffed her 2-year-old inside a suitcase before boarding a city bus. According to court documents obtained by FOX59/CBS4, 29-year-old Ashley Gibson was arrested on Dec. 12 after officers with the Bloomington Police Department were called to the area of W. 3rd Street and S. Cory Lane. As part of their investigation, officers reviewed video footage that was collected from inside the bus. The footage showed Gibson entering the bus around 1:43 p.m. with a suitcase. Court documents said Gibson sat down near the front of the bus. A short time later, the driver brought the bus to a halt near W. 3rd Street after hearing Gibson allegedly state that she had her child inside the suitcase. The video footage provided to officers appeared to show Gibson unzipping the suitcase and removing the boy. This was approximately 18 minutes after Gibson had initially boarded the bus. Gibson later confirmed to the responding officers that her child was 2 years old and that she had placed him inside the suitcase to "keep him warm." Officers noted that the child appeared to be dressed to withstand the cold weather, wearing a puffy winter jacket and pants. When she was questioned further on why she had placed the child inside the suitcase, Gibson allegedly told officers that her family caseworker "told her it was okay to do." Gibson was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail where she was preliminarily charged with level 6 felony for neglect of a dependent and criminal recklessness, which is a misdemeanor charge. According to online court records, Gibson is scheduled to appear in Monroe Circuit Court 9 for a pretrial conference on March 12 and a jury trial on April 23 at 9 a.m. Court records show Gibson entered a not-guilty plea and was released on her own recognizance on Jan. 15.
