(COLORADO) — An incoming cold front is heading toward the state and will bring a blast of arctic air to Southern Colorado beginning on Friday evening, Jan. 17 through Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 21 when slight improvements may be noted.
According to the FOX21 News Storm Team, as of the latest forecast, the coldest stretch for Colorado Springs is scheduled for Sunday night, Jan. 19 into Monday, Jan. 20 which could see a low of negative 18 degrees and a high of 2 degrees.
Where is the cold air coming from?
There's a reason this incoming cold weather is being referred to as an "arctic blast," and FOX31, our sister station in Denver, delved into the topic.
According to the National Weather Service, the cold temperatures are heading south from the Arctic, including the region surrounding the Beaufort Sea and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
What's making the Arctic air come into Colorado is due to the jet stream. FOX31 Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said the jet stream is dipping and pulling the cold pocket of air that usually sits over the Arctic down toward the Great Lakes.
According to the FOX21 Storm Team, Wednesday, Jan. 22 will see a slight warm-up, on Thursday, Jan. 23, however, the 10-day forecast for Colorado Springs shows some colder air moving back in, and potentially bringing us down to the 20s.
