A United Airlines flight struck a coyote on the runway during takeoff from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, forcing the jet, a Boeing 737 MAX 9, to return to the airport to have its landing gear examined. There were no injuries reported among the Phoenix-bound passengers or crew. The airline said Thursday it was able to arrange for another plane to complete the trip hours after the Sunday morning incident. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday the crew initially reported the plane hit a bird. Most airplane collisions with wildlife involve birds, but coyotes and white-tailed deer are the next most-common animals to strike aircraft, according to an FAA report. Chicago and its suburban communities are one of several areas across the U.S. seeing increased coyote activity. Earlier this week, a coyote wandered into an Aldi grocery store in the city’s Humboldt Park neighborhood before it was removed by animal control and transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
