This morning temps were rough. It was some of the coldest air that I've seen at Norfolk International in a while. Lows were in the teens for most areas with some 20s closer to the shore. Low Temps This Morning There was very little wind last night and this morning. We had clear skies and dry air. This allowed a lot of radiational cooling to happen, and that's why we were so cold. It was nice that there wasn't much wind. However, the winds will increase out of the southwest today as high pressure slides east. Regional Weather Map This will be a warming wind. It will run at 5-15mph. However, clouds will also increase through the afternoon. High temps will aim for the mid 40s, but we may only land in the low 40s. Forecast Temperatures Today Tomorrow we'll have lots of sunshine, but the wind will be light and out of the north/northwest. High temps will probably be about the same as today. Forecast Temps Tomorrow Things get interesting (and tricky) over the weekend. On Saturday we'll warm things up for sure as winds pick up out of the southwest. High temps will rise to the mid 50s. Forecast Temps Saturday This will be a little above average here, but a big cold pool will be dropping into the north central U.S. at that time. Temperature Departure From Average Saturday We will have a lot of clouds, but the models have backed off of the rain chances a bit during the day. I do think there will be some scattered showers, but I also think there will be some time to get outside and enjoy the milder temps. Future Trak does have some scattered showers in the morning. Future Trak Saturday Morning However, it and the GFS don't have much in the afternoon anymore. Future Trak Saturday Afternoon For now I'm going with some lower rain chances for the day, but it should be far from a washout either way. This moisture will be ahead of a cold front. That front will move in on Sunday. High temps will only be near 40 degrees. It looks like a second cold front will move through late Sunday into early Monday. At the same time an area of low pressure (COULD) form just off the coast. The models have been bouncing around with that possibility for a little while. If that happens then we could get some mix and snow Sunday night over our region. If it doesn't form then the front and the moisture will probably just head out to sea. The latest models are trending towards rain for Sunday afternoon and then a mix in the evening. GFS Sunday Afternoon GFS Sunday Evening European Model Sunday Evening It's possible that the precip could even turn into some scattered snow showers for a time. GFS Sunday Night It may become a mix again by the morning if the low forms near the coast. The long-range models are showing some snow totals for our area. GFS VS Euro Snow (Potential) Keep in mind that there will be rain during the day. So the ground will be wet. Also, we'll see how much the temperatures drop in the evening. There is definitely a chance for some melting for a time. This also hinges off of whether or not near-shore low even forms. By tomorrow we should have a better idea of the trend for Sunday. Whatever features form on Sunday should head out to sea by Monday. This will dry us out. However, the high temps will only be in the low 30s. Temperature Trend This will impact local MLK events and Inauguration events. It will probably only be in the 20s up in D.C. on Monday for highs. We are keeping an eye on the potential system for the middle of next week. There may be a system offshore that could produce some snow for part of our area. The models are very split on this though, and it is still very early. There's a chance that parts of coastal North Carolina get snow, but Hampton Roads doesn't.... It's been a long time since that happened. There's also a chance we all get nothing. So check back for updates. I'll have a full update on all of this in tomorrow's weather blog.
