According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, detectives began investigating a sexual assault that reportedly occurred in Jefferson County in July 2011. A suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Craig Long, reportedly entered a home on July 2, 2011 and sexually assaulted a woman inside the home.
In late 2024, laboratory personnel with the Indiana State Police were able to identify a potential family member of the suspect using familial DNA investigative techniques. The release said that Long, who previously lived in Jefferson County, now resides in Switzerland County.
A search warrant was served this week on Long to collect his DNA profile for comparison. Long's DNA profile was then compared with the DNA obtained from evidence collected in the case. An arrest warrant was then issued for Long on the following charges:
Two counts of rape, each a Class A felony
Two counts of burglary, each a Class A felony
One count of aggravated battery, a Class B felony.

Long was arrested without incident and was transported to the Jefferson County Jail. On Thursday morning, Long made his initial court appearance in the Jefferson County Superior Court. Long is being held on a $500,000 bond.
