Social Security numbers and financial information for thousands of current and former Salem-Keizer School District employees may have been exposed in a data breach of a retirement plan vendor that works with the district. The company, Tigard-based Carruth Compliance Consulting, announced Monday that sensitive data on the firm’s network was accessed without authorization between Dec. 19 and 26, 2024 and “certain files were copied from our systems.” The company learned of the breach on Dec. 21. The school district posted a statement on its website Wednesday about the breach, saying every employee who has worked for the district since 2008 is potentially impacted. A district spokesperson did not immediately respond to a question about how it was notifying employees. “Upon becoming aware of the activity, we immediately began working with third-party specialists to investigate the activity, confirm its impact on our systems, and to determine the scope and extent of the information affected by the activity,” Carruth said in its statement. The breach potentially exposed employees’ names along with their Social Security numbers, financial account information and in some cases driver’s license numbers. Employees who applied for a hardship loan may have had tax filings and medical billing information exposed. “We are working with Carruth to understand the full scope of the breach and to ensure they are taking appropriate steps to mitigate the impact on our employees. We will continue to update you with the latest information as it becomes available,” the district statement said. Affected employees can receive free credit monitoring through the breach response service IDX, Carruth said, by calling (877) 720-7895 to enroll. The company said it had also reported the breach to the FBI. Contact reporter Rachel Alexander: [email protected] or 503-575-1241.
