PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After more than six decades, The Old Canteen Italian Restaurant on Federal Hill is officially set to close this weekend. The Providence Journal reports that the Heritage Restaurant Group of Newport has acquired the restaurant and will become two new establishments: Wally's Wieners and Copper Club. Wally's will be on the first floor and Copper Club will be on the second floor, similar to their Thames Street setup. They are expecting to open sometime in March. Owner Sal Marzilli first announced the restaurant was for sale back in 2022. His father, Joe, first opened the iconic restaurant in 1956 and ran it until his passing in 2007, when his son Sal took over. He served countless big names including President John F. Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, and the late Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci. The Old Canteen's last day will be Sunday. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
