HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The eruption at Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has entered its fourth eruptive phase as of this morning, January 15, 2025, following low-level lava spattering that began around 5:40 a.m. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The lava flow started around 9:15 a.m., spilling from the north vent at the summit. This marks the latest activity in an ongoing eruption that began on December 23, 2024. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), seismic activity at the summit remains low, with only five small earthquakes detected in the past 24 hours. The continuous tremor from the eruption is minimal, and summit tiltmeters show gradual inflation, a typical sign of volcanic activity. Sulfur dioxide emissions measured at about 560 tons per day on January 14 remain above background levels, though significantly lower than during previous, more intense eruptive episodes. The eruption is contained within the summit area and has not affected Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone. Kīlauea's history of eruptions since 2020 includes several phases of vigorous lava effusion, followed by pauses, and experts are closely monitoring the summit for any signs of change. Mokulele flights grounded "We’re continuing to watch the situation closely," said USGS volcanologist Wendy Stovall. "While current activity is confined to the summit, the ongoing gas emissions and lava flows are a reminder of the dynamic nature of Kīlauea." The eruption is occurring within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which remains closed to the public due to the hazards of volcanic gases, rockfalls, and potential lava fountains. Officials are particularly concerned about vog (volcanic smog), which can travel downwind and cause air quality issues. Visitors and residents are advised to limit exposure to volcanic particles that can irritate the skin and eyes. The USGS continues to work with local authorities to assess hazards and provide updates on the eruption’s progress. Those planning to visit the area are urged to check the latest safety information from the National Park Service and local agencies.
