PHILADELPHIA — The last time the Eagles played the Los Angeles Rams, their opponent in this week’s divisional playoff game, was on Sunday Night Football a few days before Thanksgiving. Saquon Barkley ran for a franchise-record 255 yards on 26 carries, scoring touchdowns of 70 and 72 yards along the way. He also had 47 receiving yards. The Eagles sacked Matthew Stafford five times and hit him 11 times. L.A. went 0-for-8 on third downs. The Birds’ final margin of victory, 37-20, didn’t reflect what a romp it was at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium. But after taking that beatdown on their home turf in South Central, the Rams rattled off five straight victories and have won six of their last seven. Now, they come to the Eagles’ turf in South Philly. “They are playing really good football,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Wednesday. “I think that was pretty obvious when we went in to play them last time, too. They had won four out of five before we played them, and then pretty much have been undefeated since then. “So, they are playing really good football, both offensively and defensively — and special teams wise. And you expect that because they’ve got good players, and again, I can’t say enough about this coaching staff. I really think that they have a really good coaching staff led by (head coach) Sean McVay.” McVay’s team played inspired ball in Monday night’s wild-card round against Minnesota — a contest moved to Arizona because of the Los Angeles wildfires. The Rams led 24-3 by halftime over a team that had won 14 games in the regular season. “With everything that’s gone on with our community, everything that these guys have gone through, I thought they epitomized and they represented the city the right way,” McVay said postgame. “You talk about sports offering a platform for people to come together, offer a little bit of temporary relief, and I thought the way our team competed tonight was what it looked like to stay connected, to stay together. “Just the fight, the spirit, the resilience, all the different things that are great traits that this team has really built through all the challenges over the course of this season — I’m really proud of them.” In the seven weeks since losing to the Eagles on Nov. 24, the Rams have outscored opponents 166-114, including a 44-42 win over the Buffalo Bills, the second seed in the AFC behind Kansas City. The Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off a subpar passing display in their wild-card win over Green Bay. Hurts threw for just 131 yards (though no turnovers). Top receiver A.J. Brown, perhaps unfairly bashed for reading a sports psychology book on the sideline, had just one catch for 10 yards. “I’m always going to be optimistic about it,” Brown said. “(Against the Packers) wasn’t our best performance. We’ve got a great opportunity ahead. Luckily, we’ve got another opportunity to go out there and perform, and that’s what we’re focused on. “The players in this locker room, the coaching staff, we’ve done it before,” he said. “So, it’s not like it’s never been done. We’ve just got to do what we’ve got to do.” The Rams will enter Sunday’s game with the 26th-ranked defense in the league, including 20th against the pass (223.1 yards per game) and 22nd against the run (130 ypg). In the teams’ previous meeting, Hurts was 15-of-22 for 179 yards and a touchdown, taking only one sack. *** Backup QB Kenny Pickett (ribs) and DT Byron Young (hamstring) were both a full-go at Eagles practice Wednesday. Brown (knee/rest) did not practice. … The Rams held a walkthrough Wednesday following their Monday night game, but estimated a limited amount of injuries. … Despite some rust against Green Bay, Hurts is 13-2 in games he has both started and finished this season. —— Follow Christiaan DeFranco on X at @the_defranc.
