NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The Buttonwood Park Zoo is mourning the loss of its ambassador animal, Odin the Virginia opossum.
“It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Odin the Virginia Opossum, our beloved Ambassador Animal,” the BPZOO said.
According to the zoo, Odin was almost four years old when he passed, which is almost twice the life expectancy of a wild opossum.
Odin first arrived at the BPZOO in 2021 when he was just 3 months old after being deemed “non-releasable” due to an eye injury.
During his time at the zoo, he educated the community about the “incredibly misunderstood species.”
“As a member of the Animal Ambassador team, Odin’s vibrant and sweet personality helped thousands of guests to appreciate the vital role that North America’s only marsupial plays in our ecosystem,” BPZOO said.
