COLUMBIA, S.C. – A culture of violence. That is how a scathing report from a US Attorney’s Office, describes conditions at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia, South Carolina. The DOJ launched a probe into the Richland County jail in November of 2023, following multiple reports of violations.
Investigators said they received credible allegations that the detention center is structurally unsafe and that there have been sexual assaults, homicides, and prevalent violence resulting in serious injuries. According to the department’s findings, the jail violates inmates’ constitutional rights.
US Attorney of South Carolina Adair Boroughs says, “Our investigation has revealed that these incidents are not isolated. The incidents of violence at Alvin S. Glenn are pervasive, systematic and commonplace.”
The report recommends some remedial measures. They include better staffing and a reporting system for complaints.
