Drivers headed northbound on Inwood Road near Forest Lane are being detoured while crews work to repair a gas leak. Dallas Fire-Rescue told NBC 5 they received several calls Tuesday night about the smell of natural gas near a home improvement store at that intersection. DFR said firefighters could not locate the leak Tuesday night and notified Atmos so they could investigate further. On Wednesday morning, Atmos asked firefighters to return to the location so firefighters could block the street while their crews found and repaired the leak. Shortly before 11 a.m., NBC 5’s Texas Sky Ranger was overhead and saw crews appearing to be working on the 8-inch gas line. The workers dug a hole into the middle northbound lane of Inwood, directly in front of the home improvement store, and appeared to be working to fix the leak. DFR said Atmos shut off the gas at about 1:30 p.m. and some of the businesses in the area told NBC 5 they were told to close early. “In the morning [the smell] was worse. Even in our restaurant, you can smell it,” said Leticia Thilen, a manager at a nearby restaurant. “They want all the building to close because it’s dangerous, and they haven’t made any progress in fixing it.” Atmos Energy told NBC 5 they did not have a timeline for when repairs would be made and gas service had been disrupted for 11 businesses and a nearby high school. In a statement to NBC 5, Atmos Energy said: Last night, Jan. 14, Atmos Energy’s highly trained technicians responded to an odor call at 12001 Inwood Road in Dallas from Dallas Fire-Rescue. Gas to the area has been shut off and crews remain on scene to make the necessary repairs. Please be advised of road closures along Inwood Road between Forest Lane and Willow Lane. Residents may experience traffic delays and should seek an alternate route. The safety of the public, our employees, and our system is our highest priority, and we want to thank the Dallas Fire-Rescue for their support. Atmos Energy would like to remind everyone if you think you smell gas, act fast!  Leave the area immediately and from a safe distance, call 911 and the Atmos Energy emergency number, 866.322.8667: https://www.atmosenergy.com/safety/recognizing-leak   Though repair efforts block the northbound lanes, drivers are being detoured around the repair work. Drivers in the area are encouraged to find alternate routes and expect delays.
