Storm Track 3 Forecast: Late week warming before the next cold blast
Jan 15, 2025
Snow has been slow to erode and will receive some help here shortly. Overnight, temps cool but not to an absurd level thanks to a warmer flow temporarily setting up.
More sunshine and added warmth will drive temps closer to average over snowpacked areas Thursday into Friday with highs in the upper 30s and 40s.
Count on plenty of 50s where leftover snow on the ground is not an issue.
This will all get cut short with a stern Arctic front moving south through the region on Friday.
A few rain showers will try to form over Southeast Kansas before scooting away. Winds will ramp up first in the west and spread east into Friday night. Gusts from 30-45 MPH will be common as this Arctic air settles.
Our warmest temperature on Saturday occurs around midnight and falls through the remainder of the day to the teens and twenties.
Clouds will also overspread the area, offering a chance for flurries and light snow mainly over Western Kansas for Saturday. Any accumulations will be light and kept under an inch. Winds will be gusty and add to the frigid chill with a feels like factor from -5 to -15 degrees.
Another piece of energy keeps clouds in play Sunday into Monday with a quick shot for light snow targeting the western half of our viewing area. This disturbance may have a little more meat on the bones for snowfall accumulations over Southwest Kansas, however, amounts will still be light.
The brutal cold takes lows Monday and Tuesday morning in parts of northern Kansas below zero. I suspect a Cold Weather Advisory will soon be issued for this incoming dangerous cold. Temps will not step out of the freezer until mid to late next week.
