Robbinsville wrestling crushed in dual meet against Delaware Valley
Dec 16, 2025
ROBBINSVILLE — It was easy to identify how the defending Group I state champion Delaware Valley High School wrestling team was able to crush Robbinsville, 55-18, Tuesday night.
All four of Robbinsville’s returning region qualifiers lost.
“That was not a good formula for us,” said Robbinsvill
e coach Dan Hughes after nearly all his top guns went down to defeat.
“That’s as good as we have looked in a December match in a long time,” said Delaware Valley coach Andy Fitz.
It’s understandable the two coaches had a very different take on what transpired because there was the thought this match might at least be somewhat competitive.
Robbinsville got off to a good start when DelVal forfeited 106 and Alex Viscido pinned at 113, but it was all downhill from there until Anthony Inverso stopped a 10-bout DeiVal run with a pin at 215 pounds.
The guy who ignited DelVal was Julian Bednar at 120 pounds. After giving up the first points on a takedown, Bednar rallied to beat Vincent Grippa, 9-7, by twice recording near fall points. Grippa was 34-4 last year and a CVC Tournament champion.
“That was one of the matches we were worried about,” said Fitz. “We knew how good Grippa is there, but we also know Bednar is a quality athlete. “He’s a very good wrestler. He wrestled very well tonight, as did a lot of our kids.”
Second in districts last year, Lucas Messinger was the next Raven to hit the mat at 126 pounds. He also took an early lead, but then got cradled by Tanner Donaruma and stuck at the 2:38 mark.
Other Robbinsville region qualifiers who lost were Michael Panzer at 138 and Tyler Shane at 175.
Panzer fell in a quick 5-1 hole, and although he held his own from there, Tye Falkenstein gave him few openings and ended up posting a 6-2 decision.
Shane, meanwhile, gave up two takedowns in the first period and then got pinned by Olivier Paul following a blast double.
Additional pins for the Terriers came from Tristan Fawthrop (132), Sebastian Dobak (150), Anthony Brito (190) and Luke Cyphert, who was filling in for regular heavyweight Luken Alberdi (25-9 last year).
DelVal’s success in the upper weights was even more encouraging because it bumped up with Alberdi out of the lineup.
“Brito is a huge success story,” said Fitz of a wrestler who is really a 175-pounder. “He’s a typical DelVal kid because he put his time in. He’s going to give us a great year and we are going to put him in the lineup as often as we can. I’m really proud of him. Alberdi will be back by the end of the week, so that will give us more depth up top and a lot of flexibility.”
Fitz also indicted the plan is for one of the team’s 113-pounders to get down to 106.
DelVal faces a test on Friday when it hosts traditional Group 2 power High Point. Robbinsville, meanwhile, will be right back in the fire Wednesday night at Wall before hosting a strong 14-team tournament on Saturday.
Among the strong teams at the Robbinsville Tournament are Rancocas Valley, Pt. Pleasant Boro, Lacey Township, Shawnee and Brick Memorial. As such, a high individual finish there will be impressive because this is deeper than a district.
