New Kansas state license plate productions are delayed, here's why
Jan 15, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas officials are cautioning people to expect delays with the production of a recently approved new state license plate.
27 News reached out to the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) and Shawnee County Treasurer's Office about reports of delays in the production of the new state license plate. The new plate design was approved following a public vote in 2023 and began to be distributed to the public in 2024.
Zach Denney with the KDOR told 27 News production of the new state license plates was delayed recently due to a mixture of the holidays and winter weather. These factors impacted the vendor responsible for producing the new plates.
How do you get one of the new distinctive Kansas license plates?
"Our license plate manufacturer typically shuts down for two weeks over the holidays, but the winter storm delayed their reopening by an additional week," Denney said. "They are now back up and running and working on January orders."
Shawnee County Treasurer Larry Mah also reported the vendor is back up and running. He encourages people in Shawnee County who are waiting for their new state license plates and who still have temporary tags in place to be patient.
"If someone is waiting for a plate, they should continue to display the temp (paper) plate," Mah said. "If they have not received the new plate by the end of this week, they can call our office and we will investigate."
Denney said the new plates should be shipped out before a driver's temporary tags expire. For more information on the new state license plates, click here.
