POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Powhatan County has hired a new Fire & Rescue Chief. Powhatan County announced its hire of David "DJ" C. Johnston as the new Fire & Rescue Chief, effective on Friday, Jan. 17. Chief Johnston will succeed Fire & Rescue Chief Phil Warner, who is retiring after dedicating many years of service in Powhatan County. According to the county, Chief Johnston is bringing over a wealth of knowledge and experience with him to Powhatan County -- after a 17-year tenure at Hanover County Fire and EMS, where he most recently served as Deputy Chief. In addition, he holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Liberty University and has been acknowledged multiple awards, as well as various leadership positions. Chief Johnston stated, “I am excited to work alongside the men and women of Powhatan Fire and Rescue and ensuring that our team is prepared and ready to serve the community.” As the new Fire & Rescue Chief, Johnston will be leading emergency services for Powhatan County -- which includes fire, rescue and emergency management. “Volunteerism is the foundation of emergency services in Powhatan County," said County Administrator Bret Schardein. "We were impressed with DJ’s dedication and focus on volunteers, as he will lead our hybrid system that includes both volunteer and career staff to serve our citizens and business communities. I want to thank Deputy Chief Taylor Goodman for his service, not just for stepping up during the transition, but for his contributions over the years that are in no small part why we enjoy such an excellent emergency services team today.” Powhatan County Fire & Rescue team also extends their thanks to Deputy Chief Taylor Goodman, who served as the Interim Chief during the transition of positions.
